Saints squad to face Salford

Paul Wellens has named his 21-man St. Helens squad to take on Salford Red Devils on Sunday afternoon, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm at the Salford Stadium.

The Red V are looking to build winning form as the end of the regular season appears in sight, with seven rounds of action left and the table looking very tight in the top six play-off spots, but should results go in favour of the Saints, they could move into third after Round 21.

Last Friday, Saints put in a gutsy performance to beat Leeds Rhinos at the Totally Wicked Stadium, 22-18, with fantastic spirit on display across the team, highlighted by a brace of tries by fullback Jack Welsby.

Head Coach Wellens makes two changes to the squad that was announced for that win over Leeds last week; with Curtis Sironen possibly marking his return to action following injury, and hooker Jake Burns moving into the First Team after impressing in our Reserves ranks.

The 23-year-old has 20 Saints Reserves appearances to his name across both this and last year, scoring eight times in the Red V, but he has also played for North Wales Crusaders this season on four occasions and crossed the whitewash three times. Jake was also the Saints’ Reserves Player of the Year in 2022 and has now been issued the First Team squad number #36.

The two outgoing players from last week’s declaration are Taylor Pemberton who has joined York Knights on loan for the remainder of the 2023 season, and Konrad Hurrell. Wellens in his weekly press conference on Thursday revealed that the Tongan centre is set for four weeks on the sidelines due to a calf injury picked up in the Leeds match last Friday night.

Salford are looking to stop a losing run which was extended to six defeats away at Catalans last Saturday.

St. Helens and Salford have had some fantastic clashes in recent years, including last year’s Super League Semi-Final, and this one coming up should be another thrilling game of rugby league action – with well over 1,000 Saints fans already securing their tickets.
