Saints squad for Season Opener

Paul Wellens has named his first 21-man squad for Betfred Super League 2024 ahead of St.Helens’ season-opening match against London Broncos this Friday, which kicks off at 8pm at the Totally Wicked Stadium!

It’s the start of a brand-new journey for the Saints with the new campaign ready to be launched, a few new faces, a new captain and the same ambition to earn silverware over the next eight months.

The Saints’ three new recruits could all make their first official appearances for their debuts with the Club on Friday, those men are; #3 Waqa Blake, #9 Daryl Clark, and #19 Matt Whitley. The Red V’s #24 Jake Burns is also prepped for his first season as a full-time rugby league player, having progressed from our Reserves side to join the First Team. Should Burns feature he too would make his official debut for St.Helens R.F.C.

It was announced in January that Saints stalwart Jonny Lomax had been named captain, Friday is likely to mark the half-back’s first time leading out the team in that role, as well Jack Welsby’s maiden appearance as the Club’s Vice Captain.

Head Coach Wellens had confirmed some players would, unfortunately, miss this Round One fixture.

Joe Batchelor is expected to miss a few weeks due to a collarbone issue picked up during the friendly game against Salford. Morgan Knowles had a grumbling groin issue and surgery on his thumb in the off-season and it was hoped he would be back for Friday but should be available for next week. Meanwhile, Moses Mbye has had a slight issue with his knee which has been treated so he should be back fit in the coming weeks.

Sione Mata’utia is back ready for selection following the serving of a two-match suspension picked up at the end of last season, and England international Matty Lees, who did not feature in either of the Saints’ two Pre-Season matches, is also in the 21-man squad declaration for Friday night.
