💬 WELLENS AHEAD OF WIGAN AWAY

After the disappointment of last Friday night’s narrow home defeat to Castleford Tigers, the Saints boss opened up about a long weekend and some honest conversations he has had with his players, as the team looks to get back to wining ways together.

No more motivation is needed for The Derby against our oldest foes, but on the back of two defeats the Red V are stinging and want to right some wrongs.

📊 THE RECORD AGAINST THE WARRIORS

Super League summary – First Team

St Helens and Wigan have met 103 times across all competitions in the Super League (Summer) era, and in the competition itself Saints have the lead in the head-to-head scores.

The Red V have won 48 Super League matches, including victories in the 2000, 2004 and 2020 Grand Finals, plus play-off wins in 2000, 2002, 2009, 2011 and 2019. The Cherry & Whites have got the victory 40 times in the league, and the honours have been shared in a draw just four times.

Our highest scoring Super League game against Wigan came at the Millennium Stadium for Magic Weekend back in 2008, where we put the Warriors to the sword in a 57-16 victory. Our widest ever margin of victory over Wigan in Super League was a 42-0 win in 2020 in a behind closed doors game at Salford’s AJ Bell Stadium during the Covid pandemic.

🔻 SMITH AHEAD OF WOMEN’S DERBY

On a run of good form which has seen his team win their last seven matches in a row, Matty Smith knows that the Saints will need to step up to keep that run rolling against the current league leaders.

St.Helens have already got a win over Wigan Warriors Women in 2024, but with this match being the first derby to be played at their home stadium it’s going to be a tough task to get the away victory.

Saints TV subscribers can watch the full Coach Preview with Matty Smith!

🔍 A LOOK AT WIGAN – FIRST TEAM

Proudly boasting that they currently hold all four trophies, Wigan are the ones being hunted now after St.Helens’ four-year straight reign as Super League champions came to an end. Spirits at Wigan are high as they look to establish their own dominant period of success.

Wigan Warriors’ Head Coach Matt Peet

Head Coach Matt Peet has overseen Wigan win; the Challenge Cup in 2022, followed by the League Leaders’ Shield and Grand Final in 2023. 2024 began in similar fashion with the World Club Challenge victory over Penrith Panthers in February at the DW Stadium, a game that went right down to the wire. Then in June, they secured the Challenge Cup trophy to complete the set and have all trophies in their possession at the same time.

Wigan boast a strong squad in 2024 with a number of high profile recruits this season such as; Kruise Leeming, Adam Keighran and Sam Walters, as well as former Saint Luke Thompson who has returned to these shores following a stint with NRL side Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

Add these new men into a side that has the likes of Bevan French, Jai Field and Harry Smith already in their ranks – it’s not hard to see why many backed the Warriors to do well again in 2024.

In 2024, Wigan have only tasted defeat twice to St.Helens on Good Friday to end their winning run of matches which stretched back to July of 2023. Hull KR have also beaten the Warriors at Craven Park in April.

Wigan’s Bevan French is the 2023 Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel

Since that game in East Hull though, they have built up another winning run and picked up a Wembley victory over Warrington to boot. Stood at the top of the league table, with a game in hand too, the Warriors will be itching for some revenge after Good Friday and to stay at the top.

Whilst Saints are down on troops due to injuries, and Moses Mbye misses this game due to a one-match penalty notice, Wellens will back his men to rise to the challenge and to put right some wrong from previous weeks. It’s always an intense affair when Saints meet Wigan, and will likely be yet another thrilling chapter in our storied rivalry.

THREE TO WATCH

  • Bevan French – the current Man of Steel holder, his score on Good Friday was the only points Wigan managed to get at our home, he is always an attacking threat and only needs to sniff half a gap to race through it
  • Jai Field– incredibly quick, the fullback links up consistently well with French to either finish or create scores
  • Junior Msemba – a rising star in the Warriors’ ranks, the tall and powerful back-rower has made himself very much at home in their pack and is a tough man to tackle

🗣 STOTT ON STRONG RUN OF FORM

Producing some of her career-best rugby so far in the 2024 season, Darcy Stott has been bringing a lot of power and drive off the bench for Matty Smith’s team.

Ahead of St.Helens travelling over to Wigan on Friday night, the prop forward talks about her excitement about being involved in The Derby!
