📰 SQUAD NEWS

Paul Wellens makes just one change to the squad that got a big home win over Castleford, with Moses Mbye back available for selection after serving a one-match penalty notice.

Tee Ritson is the Saint who steps out from our previous squad selection.

Leigh have named a very strong squad with star fullback Matt Moylan and vital hooker Edwin Ipape back in their 21. The Leopards’ equation is simple, if they win, they are in the play-offs and with a whole host of players heading out of the club this will serve as their final home match, so motivation will be very high for this game, and they always up their intensity for matches against Saints.

Leigh Leopards 21-man squad vs St.Helens

Gareth O’Brien, Zak Hardaker, Ricky Leutele, Josh Charnley, Matt Moylan, Lachlan Lam, Tom Amone, Edwin Ipape, Robbie Mulhern, Kai O’Donnell, Jack Hughes, Josh Asiata, Matt Davis, Frankie Halton, Owen Trout, Ollie Homes, Keanan Brand, Umyla Hanley, Brad Dwyer, Darnell McIntosh, Aaron Pene.

🔔 BELL ON BUSINESS END OF THE YEAR

The Saints are visiting a Club that James knows well, having joined St.Helens after a year with Leigh in 2021, and with the play-offs race going right down to the wire he is well aware just how fired up the Leopards will be in their last-ditch bid to get into the top six.

Bell praises his fellow forwards, especially Matty Lees, who have been working exceptionally hard during an injury-hit season and is happy to have his rotating loose-forward partner Morgan Knowles playing too.

🔻 WHAT KIT WILL SAINTS BE WEARING?

The Saints’ 24 Home Kit will be worn on Friday night on the road!

Our traditional white shirt with a Red Vee is a sharper, modern look, with watermark shard designs whilst the ‘V’ itself is a subtle two-tone design, a feature never before seen on a St.Helens shirt.

💬 COACH PREVIEW

Wellens talks about the intensity of the fixture with a derby-like rivalry built from recent seasons between Saints and Leigh.

With senior players returning to the fold last week, our injury list is looking lighter and the mood in the camp is looking brighter too. Wellens discusses those players heading into an important fixture after getting their first minutes following rehab and recovery.

St.Helens’ Boss also pays credit to the young players who stepped up this season, insisting they still have a part to play and can be trusted to come in if needed.

🗣️ WHO WILL BE THE MATCH OFFICIALS?

Liam Moore will be the referee for Friday evening’s fixture, and he will be supported by Touch Judges Rich Thompson and Mark Craven, and as with all Super League fixtures in 2024 there will also be the Video Referee Ben Thaler at Rugby League’s remote refereeing base.

🐆 A LOOK AT LEIGH

2023 will live long in the memory for Leyther supporters, ensuring they would stay in the Super League for longer than one season for the first time, and of course their greatest day of the modern era with a Challenge Cup trophy victory at Wembley Stadium.

Expectations in 2024 have therefore been a little higher, and they have the chance to break into the play-offs mix at the very final stage of the regular season.

Adrian Lam has continued to be backed by bold owner Derek Beaumont with some solid recruitment in the off-season. Former Saints Dan Norman and Lewis Baxter are amongst the new faces, but their headline signing is half-back Matt Moylan from NRL side Cronulla Sharks.

Mid-season recruitment has seen them bring in the likes of Brad Dwyer and Darnell McIntosh from Super League sides, and some NRL talent with former Melbourne Storm prop Aaron Pene, and young English fullback Bailey Hodgson who has been playing in Australia.

Leigh in recent weeks have become one of the form sides in the competition, as such they have gone on a good winning run which has clawed them into the sixth spot in the final week. However, last time out they lost out 0-24 at home against a high-flying Hull KR.

They will be firing out of the blocks looking to get a win over St.Helens and firm up their place in the play-offs, however Saints are in a similar mindset and could earn a home eliminator match next week with a win over the Leopards on their own turf.

The Leythers will also be looking over their shoulder as Leeds and Catalans will be vying to sneak in through a Leigh drop in the table.

THREE TO WATCH

  • Lachlan Lam – back to his dangerous best, he can run and create and is a vital cog in the Leigh attack
  • Tom Amone – a powerful prop who looks to break through the middle or get a quick play of the ball off
  • Matt Moylan – Leigh’s statement signing, he will look to link up well with Lam and lead off their attacks
