Matty Lees was the big winner at St.Helens' annual End of Season Awards, proudly sponsored by Totally Wicked, taking home three trophies including being named Player of the Year. Star winger Tommy Makinson was also celebrated by receiving the Chairman's Award.
The Red V’s #10 also picked up the Members’ and Players’ Player of the Year accolades on a memorable night that was held in the 1873 Lounge at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
Our First Team players and staff were joined by our fantastic Club Partners and Sponsors as we reflected on the 2024 seasons. The Club kept supporters up to date on the winners during the evening on our social media channels: X | Facebook | Instagram.
With one eye to the future our Scholarship, Academy and Reserves Players of the Year were also confirmed, and a couple of our senior Saints were recognised for their off-field efforts.
The night also offered the Club the chance to say thank you and good luck to our Saints who are moving on from the Club.
Here is a summary of the event with our winners listed below.
Club Wellbeing Ambassador
Presented by the Saints’ Chaplain & Wellbeing Manager Paul Johnson, Moses Mbye has excelled as a player throughout this year and his positive influence around the squad has been immeasurable. However, alongside this he has completed a Diploma in Project Management in Australia and pursued work experience with EFT Construction (a Club sponsor) whilst playing.
Moses has also supported and worked with St.Helens Women’s team, giving up his free time to help their development.

Club Academic Achiever
Also presented by Paul Johnson, Jonny Lomax received this award after completing his BSc in Physiotherapy at Salford University.
Jonny has been a real motivating figure as captain of all of the players that are currently studying, and he has encouraged others to consider higher education as an option.

Thank you to our departing Saints
To all our Saints embarking on their next chapters, thank you, good luck, and remember that ‘Once A Saint, Always A Saint’.
Under 16s Player of the Year
The Saints Scholarship have worked hard throughout the 2024 season playing eight matches, winning four of them and narrowly losing out in the other four.
Academy Head Coach Derek Traynor handed the award on and spoke with pride about our recipient Chris Matagi for his remarkable efforts, not only on the field, but his efforts off it to develop as a player and as a young man.
Chris now steps up into our Academy side, and we wish him the best with the new challenge!

Under 18s Player of the Year
The Saints Academy had an outstanding season in 2024, finishing at the top of the regular season table to earn a home Semi-Final and then a home Grand Final which sadly they just narrowly fell short in.
The POTY for our Under 18s was the Captain, George Whitby, who has led exceptionally upholding standards and raising his game to be a leader on and off the pitch. This was recognised by England Academy not only with his selection in the team, but he was chosen by former Saint Paul Anderson to be the England captain too.
After impressing so much in our Academy and Reserves ranks George earned his Super League debut in the late summer and scored a try to make it a memorable one. Whilst George and our young guns came oh so close to earning the Academy Championship, he did win the Reserves title with a strong performance over Wigan in the Reserves Grand Final.
Reserves Player of the Year
Derek Hardman’s Reserves went one step better in 2024 by reaching back-to-back Grand Finals and in 2024 winning the competition with a finale victory over Wigan Warriors after also finishing top of the regular season table!
Throughout 2024 Alfie Sinclair has shown himself to be a powerful and impressive forward, causing opposition defences issues with such strong runs.
In the heat of the middles battle he has never taken a backwards step and deservedly took home the 2024 Reserves Player of the Season award!
Young Player of the Year
Following up on a breakthrough season can be tough, but 2023’s winner of the St.Helens’ Young Player of the Year earned the accolade once again in 2024, after hammering home just why he is one of the most promising youngsters in all of Super League.
George Delaney has been at just 20 years old playing big minutes, taking in tough carries, and battling relentlessly in defence like a man far more senior in experience. With the team down on troops during the year, George has stepped up to be consistent and reliable with his strong efforts.
It’s been another memorable campaign for Saint George, after earning his first international call-up, making 25 appearances in the Red V, being nominated for Super League’s Young Player of the Year, and now being named Saints’ Young Player of the Season in back-to-back years.
Members’ Player of the Year
Chosen by our brilliant 2024 Saints Members, Matty Lees was the chosen player for his much coveted award, because after all it is chosen by the fans who cheer the team on week after week, year after year.
In a season that presented plenty of challenges, Lees stepped up as a leader in the middle of the field and whilst big minutes have not been uncommon to the prop in the past, he has done so many big shifts this year that our fans have really taken note on just how important Matty is to our team.
Try of the Season
The Saints scored 115 tries in the 2024 season, many of them memorable but the fan vote from four of our very best selected the one that will go down as THE try to always remember from this season, and it had to be…
In his final season Tommy Makinson scored a vital try that sent the Saints on their way to an unforgettable Good Friday home victory over Wigan Warriors. Lewis Dodd kicked a ball to the right corner, and T-Mak rose highest to catch it and ground it in one motion that sent the Totally Wicked Stadium into a frenzy.
Take a look at that score below…
This Is Saints Award
First introduced in 2022, the This Is Saints Award is handed to a player for his efforts and one-percent-ers that may go unnoticed outside of the Club environment, but are held in high regard internally by players and coaching staff alike.
Sione Mata’utia has shown countless times in 2024 a team-first mentality, willing to put his hand up to play absolutely anywhere for the team. ‘Cee’ has played at prop, centre and back-row for the Red V, and has performed strongly wherever he played.
A thoroughly deserved winner of this accolade.
Players’ Player of the Season
One of the most sough after trophies at any team’s annual presentation evening, because this one is chosen by your teammates, and the winner of the Saints’ 2024 Players’ Player of the Season was Matty Lees!
Take a listen to the team on the video below to hear just why ‘Leesy’ was their pick for this award.
Player of the Year
It had to be… after an incredible year in the middle of the field and continuing to prove himself to be one of the best prop forwards in the Super League, Matty Lees was chosen by our coaching staff for the big prize: St.Helens’ 2024 Player of the Year.
Chairman’s Award
Presented by Eamonn McManus, the Chairman’s Award is presented to an individual for their outstanding contribution to our Club.
For 14 seasons of tremendous service to our club, including but not limited to 207 tries scored and countless memories made for supporters the world over, Tommy Makinson held back tears as he was handed this special thank you.
Here’s to you, Tommy Makinson… 🎶
