St.Helens Women are thrilled to welcome promising outside back Georgina Holmes to our Women’s First Team squad ahead of the 2025 season.
Holmes joins the Red V Women after being spotted playing, and serving as captain, for the University of Leeds’ Women’s Rugby Union team.
The 21-year-old is currently in her final year as a student at the University and is working towards finishing her degree in Human Physiology, with her dissertation topic also closely linked to rugby as well.
As a union player since the age of twelve, Holmes has been playing most recently in the centre or wing positions but does have experience amongst the forwards. Away from the education environment, Georgina has also been playing for community union side West Park Leeds in the Championship North 1 competition.
Georgina Holmes shared her delight about joining St.Helens Women and told saintsrlfc.com: “I’m really excited to get going! This is something I’ve wanted to do for a really long time, but I was unsure where or when to go, but now is the time and this is the best place that I could ask for.”
Revealing how the move to join St.Helens Women came about; Holmes thanked the University of Leeds for their support.
“Pete Seabourne [Head of Rugby at the University of Leeds] put me in contact with the coaches here at Saints, and I think it’s a really good opportunity to try something new, and I think it’s the best place to do that.”
Georgina will have a familiar face at training though, having played at Old Crossleyans RUFC in her hometown Halifax with Saints winger Phoebe Hook.
“We played together at Under 15s and 18s, we were often centre partners, so it would be really nice to be on the pitch with her again!
“Since Phoebe came in, I have really followed the Women’s Super League mainly because she was a good friend making that transition from union to league. It makes me feel a lot more at ease knowing she has done it and that I’m hoping to do that and be successful too.”
When asked where she believes she could play after making the switch from union to league, Georgina backs herself to play in the centres.
“I think I offer a lot of power on the field; I’ll try to read the game quite well and play quite tactically. For my size I’m quite powerful, and I think I’m a lot faster than I look like I can be! That might suit me to centre or maybe the wing as I am getting to know the game.”
Pre-Season for the Saints Women has now begun under Coaches Hardman & Richards, as the team looks to continue putting in strong performances in 2025.
Craig Richards commented on the news of Holmes joining his and Hardman’s squad, and added: “Georgina is a signing we are really excited about. She will add competition and genuine pace to our back line, and she has been in great form playing rugby union, but we know that her attributes are perfect for league.”
To close, Georgina is ready to start and get ripped in with her new teammates!
“I’m just excited to get going with the team! Especially one with such a legacy and such a successful story. I can’t wait.”
