The family of legendary Saint Alex Murphy have made a plea to help locate his Challenge Cup winners' medals.
Murphy has been one of the finest sporting stars that the town of St Helens has produced, with a trophy-laden career both at and away from our Club further highlighting that. A true great of our town and our Club, Alex Murphy was one of the greatest number sevens rugby league has ever seen.
As a Saint, Murphy won every domestic team honour available with our club, including Challenge Cup victories in 1961 and 1966. In total for St.Helens he played 320 matches, scored 175 tries and 42 goals.
In late 2024, sadly Alex was diagnosed with vascular dementia which has been a doubly cruel blow following the passing of his beloved wife Alice earlier in the year.
Alex’s daughter Ann has taken to social media in an appeal for help after revealing her dad’s diagnosis, stating that Murphy’s five Challenge Cup winners medals and perhaps more of the memorabilia attached to his careers, are sadly no longer in the legendary player’s possession and could they please be returned.
It appears that some people may have taken advantage of Alex’s condition, however this may also be just a case of others accepting these pieces of history as gifts but being unaware of his diagnosis.
The Saints are joining this appeal for these pieces of history to be returned, and should anyone wish to drop them off directly with the Club at the Totally Wicked Stadium they will be returned to the Murphy family immediately.
If you have an item and would like to return it to Alex Murphy and his family, then please feel free to visit our home ground at any time during opening hours. Thank you.
