Saints claimed a well earned 18-4 victory over Leeds Rhinos on our return to the Totally Wicked Stadium!
First Half
Nine minutes in Saints got a penalty deep in Leeds territory after a high shot from Harry Newman. Saints opted to go for two points and Kyle Feldt stuck it through the middle of the posts, 2-0 Saints led early on.
Leeds’ first opening came 17 minutes in. A six again in the Saints half gave them better field position and Kallum Watkins tried to thread Keenan Palasia through a gap down the middle but some strong Saints defence forced a knock on.
It was the hosts who had the golden chance to add the second lot of points of the game 25 minutes in. Ryan Hall knocked on at the play the ball deep inside his own half. Saints got awarded a penalty for offside from the scrum and opted again for two points. Feldt converted from right in front, 4-0 Saints led.
The visitors again threatened. Kallum Watkins broke and found an offload inside Saints territory, Leeds then moved it through the hands left but good covering defence from Saints forced a knock on with the try-line beckoning.
Again Leeds had a great chance. Hall intercepted a pass and raced almost the full length of the field but Harry Robertson tackled him before more retreating Saints defenders forced the Leeds winger into touch over the goal-line. The visitors challenged the call, but it was unsuccessful.

It was Saints who grabbed the first try of the contest in the final minute of the first half. A great shot by Jonny Lomax on Morgan Gannon forced a knock on inside the Leeds 20. A few tackles into our set, Saints moved it right to left, Sailor threw a quick pass under pressure to Deon Cross who broke through the line and dove over in the corner. Feldt was unable to convert with the final kick of the first half, 8-0 Saints led at the break.

Second Half
We had a trip to the video referee early on in the second half. Leeds kept the ball alive and Lachie Miller broke down the middle before finding an offload off the floor. They moved it through the hands, Ash Handley finding Riley Lumb who scored in the corner. Jake Connor’s conversion bounced out off the post, 8-4 Saints led.
Leeds tried to pinch another. Camped on the Saints line, Jarrod O’Connor tried to pinch one on the last tackle from dummy half but Saints held him up short of the line.
Saints tried to fightback. A high kick to the right edge was pushed backwards in the air by Feldt but Agnatius Paasi was unable to collect the ball at his feet.
Leeds then tried to be inventive. Under their own sticks, Brodie Croft kicked early in the tackle count and Newman claimed it. A six again pushed Leeds even further forward but Croft’s right to left pass sailed into touch.
The hosts could have increased the lead with 18 minutes to go. Off the back of a break by Owen Dagnall, Saints came forward and Matt Whitley offloaded to Lomax in support on his inside, but the pass was ruled forward.
Saints forced a knock on from the restart and had a scrum ten metres out. From the scrum, we went left and moved it through the hands, Sailor finding Dagnall on the edge and he cut inside from the wing and buried his way over in the corner. Feldt nailed the conversion from the left touchline, 14-4.
“Dagnall’s IN” 🙌

Again Leeds tried to find a way back into the game. They moved the ball left inside our half and former Saint James Bentley was met with a good, low hit by Lomax which forced a knock on.
Saints grabbed a final try in the last minute of the game. The hosts marched downfield and with seconds left on the clock, Sailor spotted a gap, ran through it and scored in the corner under pressure. Feldt couldn’t convert with the final kick of the game, as Saints won on their return to the Totally Wicked Stadium with a 18-4 victory over Leeds Rhinos!
