MATTY Smith was pleased to return to action last Friday and reported no ill-effects from his 80 minute performance.
The scrum-half broke his leg in the club’s pre-season match with Widnes and missed the opening six fixtures of the campaign.
But he came back in Saints’ win over Warrington and was instrumental in getting the result.
“It happens,” he said. “You get injuries throughout your career and hopefully you don’t get too many. Thankfully, this wasn’t too serious and I was able to get back out there in eight or nine weeks. The medical staff did a cracking job and it is credit to them.
“I felt a little rusty but came through fine. It was good to get out there with the lads as I am not good at watching games. It is frustrating to sit back and watch; it was far better being there and having an input on the game.
“It was really good to get the two points and now we can look forward to this week.
“As the games go on we will hopefully get our combinations right and we know we still have lots to work on. We need to be better on both sides of the ball, but we are going in the right direction.
“We have the right people in the right positions and when Jonny (Lomax) comes back then we are close to full strength. It also allows Jon Wilkin to move into the middle and he had a fantastic game on Friday.”
Saints head to Salford on Thursday and Smith says Saints have to get it right in defence if they are to be successful.
“Salford are attacking well and have really good players in Michael Dobson, Todd Carney and Robert Lui,” he added. “They take some stopping so it is important for us to concentrate on our defence this week. If we do that our attack will look after itself so it has to be our main focus.”
