Saints moved into fourth position in the Betfred Super League table, after beating Hull FC 6-13 at the MKM Stadium!

First Half

Saints started the better side in the opening ten. Kyle Feldt did well to stay in play after collecting a pass on the wing and earned a penalty before Tristan Sailor nearly peaked through a gap but was stopped short of the line.

It was the visitors that had a prime opportunity to take the lead eleven minutes in though. Morgan Knowles tried to put Matty Lees through a gap but the latter was taken out without the ball. The visitors opted for two points and captain Jonny Lomax slotted it through from 25 metres out, 0-2 Saints led.

From the restart Saints had a great chance to add more points. Curtis Sironen broke through a gap, he found Matt Whitley who then found Owen Dagnall but he was tackled short of the line. A penalty followed before Saints moved the ball from left to right, with Sailor finding Feldt with a cut-out pass on the wing and he cut inside to score the first try of the game. Lomax converted from the right touchline, 0-8 the visitors led.

Saints marched forward again. This time on the last tackle Lomax kicked high to the right edge towards Feldt but the ball sailed into touch on the full and Hull FC once again held firm in defence.

It took 30 minutes for the hosts to apply any real pressure. They tried to peak through the Saints line in great field position but strong defence from the Red V forced an error.

With less than four minutes to the break, Hull had their best chance. Off the back of a penalty that pushed them into Saints territory, they moved the ball left and Lewis Martin tried to dive in at the corner but some great last ditch defence from Harry Robertson and Sailor knocked the ball loose in midair.

Moses Mbye tried to add a one-pointer with seconds of the half remaining but it went waywards, as Saints deservedly led 0-8 at the break in East Yorkshire.

Second Half

Five minutes into the second half, Saints had a second try. After an initial break down the right edge by Robertson put Saints into Hull FC territory, Saints used up the rest of the tackles before Mbye kicked high to the right edge with Feldt claiming it in the air and powering his way over from close range to make it a brace for him. Lomax couldn’t convert, 0-12.

The visitors had another chance. After a successful Captain’s Challenge following Curtis Sironen putting Harvey Barron into touch, the Red V again moved right but this time Feldt was put into touch short of the try-line.

Then we had a trip to the video referee. Against the run of play, Aidan Sezer broke through a gap down the middle of the field and found Davy Litten in support who just about beat Robertson to score in the corner. Zak Hardaker converted, 6-12.

Saints then lost Dagnall to a HIA following a collision. Another chance then followed. Saints went down the short-side on the left after a break by Mbye but Lomax’s pass to Robertson went into touch.

Another trip to the video referee came as we edged towards the final ten minutes. Lomax again kicked high towards Feldt who claimed the ball and tried an audacious finish in the corner but had just about ran out of room before getting the ball down.

With less than ten minutes to go Saints again tried a one-pointer through Mbye but this time it was charged down before Saints got caught offside picking the loose ball up.

Hull started to apply pressure in the closing stages. With less than five minutes to go, Sezer put a high kick down the Hull left edge but Dagnall, back on the field after passing his HIA, claimed the ball and was tackled in the air giving Saints a penalty.

Saints sealed the win with less than two minutes to go. Barron knocked on a high kick under pressure, Saints used up their tackles before Lomax nailed the one-pointer to make it a two-score lead, 6-13 Saints were ahead.

That was the final action of a tight contest in East Yorkshire, as Saints took home the two points following a hard-fought 6-13 victory over Hull FC.
