Saints delivered a strong defensive performance to beat Leeds Rhinos 0-6 in West Yorkshire on Friday evening!

First Half

Saints made an immediate error, as Kyle Feldt’s opening kick off sailed into touch. Leeds marched forward but some tough Saints defence held firm.

The visitors lost Daryl Clark nine minutes in, as he left the field for a HIA after attempting to make a tackle. Soon after, Saints posed their first threat. Harry Robertson broke down the right edge, he found Jonny Lomax in support but Saints were unable to make the most of the chance, with Robertson then stopped on the last tackle.

It was the visitors who took the lead though, 15 minutes in. Saints went down the left edge, Tristan Sailor threw a dummy and then found Owen Dagnall on the wing, he did brilliantly to spin away from a tackle and then reached out from close range to score. Lomax couldn’t convert, 0-4 Saints led.

25 minutes in Saints had another good chance as Lomax’s kick was chased well and it forced Leeds to concede a dropout. The hosts went short and knocked it on forward giving Saints a scrum ten metres out and Robertson was caught high on the first play. The visitors opted for two points which Lomax converted, 0-6.

Leeds tried to fightback. After a penalty, Leeds moved into Saintz territory, Brodie Croft put in a low kick on the last tackle which forced Saints to concede a dropout. From that, they had another penalty and went down the left edge this time but a poor pass from Jake Connor dribbled into touch.

The Rhinos forced a Saints error from the restart and started another set in our half. Again it ended with the hosts going left with Connor finding touch after a wayward pass.

Chances continued to pour in for the hosts. This time they kept the ball alive and Croft broke through a gap, Sailor knocked the ball loose though one-on-one and Saints recovered it under our own posts. The Red V also lost Jake Burns for a HIA towards the end of the half.

With the final kick of the half, Saints opted to go for a one-pointer from long range, but Moses Mbye’s effort landed wide of the posts. 0-6 Saints led at the break after a tight opening 40 minutes.

Second Half

The Red V tried to build on the lead early in the second half. Mark Percival broke through a gap and headed downfield but the Red V were forced to settle with a dropout.

Leeds then thought they were in, as we had a trip to the video referee. A break on their left is initially stopped, then a high kick is put up and allowed to bounce. Croft passed out to James McDonnell who crashed over in the corner. The on-field verdict of no try was agreed with after a lengthy check.

The Red V then had a chance. An error in midfield gave Saints possession, but Jake Wingfield was held up short of the line on the last. Saints were then reduced to twelve men Agnatius Paasi caught Alfie Edgell high and was sent to the sin bin, with just over thirteen minutes to go.

The hosts continued to try and break down a resilient Saints defence. After a Saints knock on in midfield, they moved in our half but Kallum Watkins was tackled on the last deep inside our half which forced a turnover.

Leeds tried to move the ball around in the final minute but it was to no avail, as Saints delivered a strong defensive performance to secure a 0-6 victory over Leeds Rhinos in West Yorkshire!
