Hull KR beat Saints 12-8 at Sewell Group Craven Park, bringing an end to the Red V’s four-game winning run…

First Half

Both sides went set for set early on, but eight minutes in Rhyse Martin was shown yellow for a high shot on Morgan Knowles. The Saints forward went off for a HIA, but didn’t return to the game after failing it.

The following set, Saints had the first real chance. On the last tackle the visitors kicked high towards the middle of the field and the ball bounced into the arms of George Delaney, who replaced Knowles, but he was tackled short of the line.

Saints were then reduced to twelve 23 minutes into the game. Delaney caught Eribe Doro high as he fell into a tackle and the referee sent him for ten minutes in the sin bin.

We had our first trip to the video referee 28 minutes in. Hull KR spent a set on the Saints line which ended with Tyrone May throwing a cut-out pass to Martin who tried to burrow his way over from close range but Jonny Lomax did well to hold him up short of the line.

On the last tackle in the same set, Hull KR kept the ball alive. Jack Broadbent received it and cut inside from the left edge trying to kick ahead but some good scrambling defence saw Matt Whitley come away with the ball.

With the Robins’ next set, we had another trip to the video referee. On the last tackle, the hosts kicked high, The ball was contested by Mark Percival and James Batchelor, the latter regathered it after the contest before dropping the ball short of the line under pressure from his brother, Joe.

Hull KR were awarded a penalty 32 minutes in after a supposed late hit by Batchelor on Lewis after a Captain’s Challenge from the hosts. The Robins opted for two points which Martin converted to give them a 2-0 lead.

With less than two minutes of the half to go, Saints had a chance to level the scores. Daryl Clark spotted a gap from dummy half and exploited it. He tried to get a kick play the ball but the hosts knocked the ball loose and Chris Kendall gave Saints a penalty. Percival stepped up and converted, 2-2 we were tied at the break in East Yorkshire.

Second Half

Four minutes into the second half, the Robins had another opportunity to add two points. Lewis chipped and chased his own kick but was obstructed by Batchelor. The hosts opted for two points and Martin again converted, 4-2 Hull KR led.

Soon after we had a third trip to the video referee. A high kick by Lewis deflected back into the hosts hands. Peta Hiku broke down the wing before Tom Davies scored in the corner. The on-field verdict was no try and that was upheld, as the New Zealand international had stepped into touch.

The hosts had another penalty 55 minutes in, as Daryl Clark was judged to have stolen the ball from Martin. Again, the hosts opted for two points and Martin converted, 6-2 Hull KR led.

Three minutes later, the Robins had another penalty in a kickable position after Delaney stopped a quick play the ball from Lewis following a break. Martin added another simple two points, his fourth penalty of the night, 8-2.

It took 67 minutes for the first try of the evening. Lewis kicked a 40/20 which gave the hosts good field position. They moved it through the hands from right to left and it was the Hull KR number six who threw a cut-out pass to Joe Burgess who scored in the corner. Martin missed his first kick of the evening, 12-2 Hull KR led.

With a little over four minutes to go, we had another trip to the video referee, this time for the visitors. Welsby put in a low kick to the left corner, Deon Cross challenged Davies for the ball and grounded it, the on-field verdict of try quickly agreed with. Percival nailed the left touchline conversion, 12-8 Saints trailed.

The visitors tried to level the scores. George Whitby kicked high on the last tackle which forced Arthur Mourgue to concede a dropout. The shot clock ran out though before the game could be restarted and the full time siren sounded. 12-8 Saints were beaten by Hull KR at Sewell Group Craven Park.
