MEET David Roe!
He has raised close to £1,000 for St Helens Autism Support by shaving his head.
Inspired by our new Magic shirt, he lost is luscious locks – and handed over the results of his spoils to Mike Denning from the charity and the Saints’ squad last week.
“Firstly I would like to say a massive thank you the Saints and St Helens Autism Support for making me and my wife Angie so welcome,” David said. “I would also like to thank my daughter Kirsty and Mike Appleton for organising the visit, of which I had no idea I was going to meet the team. I was honoured to be allowed in and be able to watch them train before the game against Salford.
“Being at the time a rugby union fan, my love of rugby league began four years ago, when my other daughter Kelly bought me a rugby league shirt for Christmas. Not to disappoint her I promised I would attend a game. So I booked tickets for myself and Angie not knowing what to expect or even knowledge of the rules.
“To my delight from the kick off we were hooked and have visited most of the league grounds on our travels. I was taken in by the speed at which the game is played; it is literally end to end non-stop. The fitness and commitment of all the players is a credit to the sport. We have had great pleasure meeting various supporters and enjoying a friendly drink and banter with them after the games. I would recommend any Union supporter to go and see for themselves, they will not be disappointed.
“The highlight of following league was last year when we attended the Magic Weekend, what a spectacle! Twelve sets of fans at one venue all having a good time enjoying the atmosphere and banter with the bonus of six absolutely brilliant games. I enjoyed it so much I was almost sad to see it end.
“Which leads me onto St Helens Autism Support. Last year we supported the Bobby Robson trust by purchasing the shirt. I had been growing my hair for sixteen months to have it shaved and raise money for autism. Autism is close to our hearts with Lewis on Angie’s side of the family and Kirsty is godparent to Max.
“That decided, I heard via the Saints that this year they were supporting autism by the sale of their shirts. I thought it would be a nice gesture being a fan, to donate my sponsorship money to St. Helens Autism Support.
“After all the club gives so much to the community it’s rewarding to be able to support the team, not only on the pitch but off as well.
“Autism is now gaining more and more recognition and publicity, with the support of a great team like St Helens, it will continue to do so.”
