Saints started the game with a point to prove after a below par performance last week. And after a relentless start we took an early lead in the fourth minute. It came after a high kick by Theo Fages was spilt by Alex Walker and as Wakefield tried to drag Jack Welsby into touch, he offloaded blind in brilliant fashion to captain James Roby who scored in the corner. Lachlan Coote missed the conversion, leaving Saints with an early 4-0 lead.
Tommy Makinson scored the second try of the game in the 16th minute after some great play by Saints. The build up was quick; moving the ball across the field over to the right, where Coote quickly threw a cut-out pass to Makinson, who scored in the corner. Coote was unable to convert, leaving Saints with an 8-0 lead.
The impressive Roby got his second of the game and his 100th in the Super League era, with a cheeky dummie before squeezing through two challenges to touch down to the left of the sticks. Coote added the extras, giving Saints a 14-0 lead.
Alex Walmsley got Saints’ fourth; a powerful run which saw him beat four players before stretching to score to the left of the posts on 31 minutes. Coote scored his second conversion, making it 20-0.
Makinson was then in for his second three minutes later; Jonny Lomax with a no-look pass to the winger, who dived to score in typical Makinson fashion in the corner. A simply brilliant finish. Coote converted well from a tight angle, to increase the lead to 26-0.
Makinson made it a first half hat-trick with seconds left on the clock. It was more brilliant build up from Lomax and Coote, with the latter going long again to find the winger, who stepped inside to burst between the two defenders to score his third of the match. Coote was unable to convert, but it gave Saints a 30-0 lead at half time.
Into the second half and Wakefield grabbed their first and only try as Innes Senior ran the length of the pitch to score having intercepted a loose Lomax pass. Ryan Hampshire kicked the conversion, making it 30-6.
Regan Grace scored his eighth try in six games; touching down in the corner after a short ball from Welsby. Coote kicked the conversion from a tight angle, extending the lead to 36-6.
Bright prodigy Lewis Dodd came off the bench at hooker and later half back to score his first senior try 10 minutes from the end. Taia made the break and fed Coote who found the youngster, who cut inside, put on a step and powered over. It went upstairs, but the video referee gave it. Coote added the extras to give Saints a 42-6 lead.
Saints wrapped it up with 30 seconds left on the clock. Coote was at the heart of the attack once more; throwing the ball wide to Makinson who drove down the wing, before hooking the ball back inside brilliantly to Kevin Naiqama before he was taken into touch, and the centre scored unchallenged. Coote added the extras on the hooter, giving Saints a dominant 48-6 victory.
