Saints suffered a 28-10 defeat to Leigh Leopards, which confirmed a 5th placed finish for the Red V in the league table.

First Half

Saints had the first good opportunity with field position. Moses Mbye tried a high crossfield kick on the last tackle but it was ruled Saints had knocked it on forward before the hosts leapt on the loose ball.

Leigh grabbed the first try twelve minutes in. Lachlan Lam found in midfield found Bailey Hodgson who broke through a gap, he found Andrew Badrock in support and he scored from close range. Gareth O’Brien added the conversion, 6-0 Leigh led.

21 minutes into the contest, we had our first trip to the video referee. Leigh, camped on the Red V line after a Saints error from a kick, used up a few tackles before trying to force their way over from close range but a double movement saw Saints awarded a penalty instead. Saints lost prop Alex Walmsley for the remainder of the game though, as he failed a HIA as a result of the collision.

Three minutes later, we had a second trip upstairs. A penalty pushed Leigh into the Saints half, and a few tackles they went right and Lam threw a cut-out pass to Keanan Brand on the right wing and he stepped inside and scored. The try was awarded and O’Brien converted from near the right touchline, 12-0.

The visitors tried to open their scoring for the evening as we entered the final quarter of the first half. A strong carry by James Bell down the right edge moved the visitors forward. On the last Mbye found Mark Percival who tried to break through the Leigh line but he was tackled short.

Two minutes later, we had our first a trip to the video referee for a potential Saints try. Mbye kicked high towards the sticks and there was a contest for the ball, the ball ended up with Curtis Sironen who burrowed his way over to score. The on-field verdict of no try was quickly agreed with by the video referee though.

With less than five minutes of the opening half to go, the Leopards were then awarded a penalty in Saints territory as Matty Lees caught Lam high. The hosts opted to go for two points but O’Brien’s kick went wide, 12-0 it remained.

The hosts were reduced to twelve minutes with less than 90 seconds of the first half to go. Edwin Ipape caught Daryl Clark high with a shoulder and saw a yellow card.

Saints tried to find points in the final minute of the half with a full set on the Leigh line, but Harry Robertson was held up short as the half-time siren went, 12-0 Saints trailed at the break.

Second Half

Five minutes into the second half, Saints did have our first points of the game. The visitors forced a dropout and used up a few tackles before Robertson found Kyle Feldt who dove over to score in the corner. Percival couldn’t convert from the touchline, 12-4 we trailed.

A few minutes later, we headed upstairs again. Mbye’s high kick was fumbled by Hodgson, Saints claimed it and the ball was worked to Robertson who went over. After a lengthy check, the four-pointer was awarded. Percival added the conversion, 12-10 Saints trailed.

The Leopards had a great chance to increase their lead 13 minutes into the second half. Hodgson broke through a gap down their left edge and looked destined to score, Tristan Sailor produced a great tackle to stop him though, before Saints forced a turnover on the last tackle.

Midway through the second half, we had another trip to the video referee. O’Brien’s high kick was claimed by Umyla Hanley, he got the ball away to Jack Hughes who kicked ahead before palming it down. After a lengthy check, the on-field verdict of try was agreed with. O’Brien added the extras, 18-10.

Leigh had another with 15 minutes to go. From dummy half, Brad Dwyer found Ipape who broke through a tackle and scored under the sticks. Hodgson took over the kicking duties and added another two points, 24-10 Leigh led.

Just before the end of the game, we had yet another trip upstairs. A low Ipape kick wasn’t dealt with by Saints and Owen Trout won the race to it and scored. O’Brien’s conversion attempt went wide, 28-10 we trailed.
