Saints beat Salford Red Devils 4-46 at the Salford Community Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the Betfred Super League!
It took just three minutes for Paul Wellens’ men to take the lead. A ‘six again’ in Salford territory gave Saints an extra set. Jonny Lomax fed Curtis Sironen who broke a tackle and rounded another player to score under the sticks. George Whitby converted, 0-6 Saints led.
A second try soon followed. A couple of penalties pushed Saints deep into the Salford half, Saints moved it right and Tristan Sailor threw a cut-out pass to the returning Kyle Feldt who scored in the corner. Whitby was unable to add the extras, 0-10.
Saints had a third try within the opening twelve minutes. Another penalty pushed Saints downfield and Morgan Knowles found Alex Walmsley who broke through a gap before fending off Nathan Connell to score. Whitby converted, 0-16.
Salford’s first real threat came just after the midway point of the first half. A high shot from Knowles on Kai Morgan gave the hosts a set on our line but a loose pass from Joe Shorrocks was collected by Harry Robertson.
The fourth Red V try came 25 minutes in. Another penalty pushed Saints deep into Salford territory. Sailor found an offload in a tackle and the visitors moved it right, Robertson found Feldt who dove over in the corner for his second try of the afternoon. Whitby couldn’t convert, 0-20.
Salford threatened before the break. The hosts moved the ball through the hands downn the right edge as Esan Marsters found Sam Hill who broke. He found Connell in support on his inside but Sailor did well to track him down. A few tackles later the Red Devils went left but Whitby forced an error from Ryan Brierley and Saints survived.
After a bright start, Saints led 0-20 at half-time at the Salford Community Stadium.
It was a scrappy opening ten minutes to the second period. Saints had the best chance as Sailor broke down the right edge and found Feldt but he was pushed into touch short of the line.
Salford then had an oppourtunity of their own. Harvey Wilson broke down the middle after collecting a Chris Hill pass but opted to keep the ball instead of passing to Brierley before throwing a forward pass.
We then had a trip to the video referee. Off the back of a big break downfield from Noah Stephens, Saints went down the right edge and Sailor put in a low kick which Robertson claimed and he span over from close range to score. The on-field verdict of try agreed with. With Whitby off the field for a HIA, Feldt took over the kicking duties and nailed it from the right touchline, 0-26.
Saints had another try just before the hour mark. Salford knocked on inside their own half, the Red V used up a few tackles before heading right and Sailor again threw a cut-out pass to Feldt who finished with ease in the corner to complete his hat-trick. His conversion attempt bounced out off the post, 0-30.
Five minutes later, we had another trip to the video referee. Robertson picked the ball up from dummy half, threw a dummy and crashed his way over from close range under pressure. The try given after a quick check. Feldt added the extras, 0-36 Saints led.
An eighth try quickly followed. Salford went short from the restart but didn’t kick it ten, gifting Saints a penalty on halfway. A few tackles in Saints moved the ball through the hands down the left edge and Deon Cross found Owen Dagnall who scored his first Saints senior try in the corner. Feldt was unable to convert, 0-40.
Saints thought they had another. Lomax tried to find an offload but the ball was knocked loose and Sailor raced onto it to score. The referee had however blown his whistle early and Saints challenged the call but it proved to be unsuccessful.
There was time for another Saints score. The visitors shifted the ball from left to right from under the Salford posts, again Sailor with the cut-out pass to Feldt who strolled over for his fourth try of the day. He turned his four-pointer into six with the conversion, 0-46.
Salford grabbed a consolation in the final minute. Saints made an error from kick off and the Red Devils camped on the Red V line. They moved the ball right and Marsters found Sam Hill who scored in the corner. Chris Hankinson’s conversion attempt hit the post with the final touch of the game, as Saints won 4-46 against Salford Red Devils on Sunday afternoon!
