First Half
Castleford took the lead five minutes in. Saints made an error on the halfway line, gifting the hosts possession. They shifted it from right to left and Jason Qareqare backed himself, beating three Saints defenders around the outside to score in the corner. Tom Weaver missed the conversion from the left touchline, 4-0 Saints trailed.
Minutes later, Castleford had another great chance. Qareqare broke down the left wing again but this time tried to find Krystian Mapapalangi in support on his inside but the ball went to ground. The hosts challenged the call, suggesting the latter player had been pulled back in the process of the play and it was deemed successful. Saints’ defence held firm this time around, with Phoenix Laulu-Togaga’e tackled on the last five metres short of the line.
Off the back of another penalty, the Tigers threatened again. Again, the Red V held firm as Ashton Golding was met by the visitors as he went down the short-side on the last tackle.
27 minutes in, we had our first trip to the video referee. Inside our ten, Castleford went from left to right this time. Laulu-Togaga’e threw a cut-out pass to Semi Valemei on the wing, he went one-on-one with Deon Cross and then ball went to ground before he grounded it. Goal-line dropout was the decision.
Saints’ first half chances were very few and far between. Matt Whitley looked to collect a high kick inside the Castleford ten but the ball went to ground.
With less than five minutes to go to the break, Saints were reduced to twelve for ten minutes. Jack Welsby caught Daejarn Asi late as Saints looked to again defend our line and saw yellow. The hosts opted for two points with the resulting penalty which Weaver slotted over, 6-0.
With their next set, the Tigers had their second try. Laulu-Togaga’e’s initial break gave the hosts good field position. The hosts shifted it from right to left and Mapapalangi threw a cut-out pass to Qareqare who finished well in the corner. Weaver couldn’t convert from the touchline, 10-0.
The half-time hooter sounded at the OneBore Stadium, with Saints trailing 10-0 at the break in West Yorkshire.
Second Half
Six minutes into the second half, the Tigers had a third try. Weaver found Brock Greacen in Saints territory and he broke through a gap before rounding Tristan Sailor to score. Weaver added the conversion, 16-0.
Saints did have their first points in the 51st minute. Jackson Hastings’ high kick was fumbled and landed in the arms of Sailor inside the Castleford ten. He threw a cut-out pass to Lewis Murphy on the left wing and he dove over under pressure in the corner. Hastings was unable to convert from the touchline, 16-4 we trailed.
The visitors spilled the kick off, giving the visitors a set inside our ten. From that scrum, Castleford went left and Laulu-Togaga’e again found Qareqare who dove over to score in the corner. Weaver couldn’t convert, 20-4.
After another break downfield, the Tigers were awarded a penalty for a high shot on the Saints line and opted for two points. Weaver slotted it over to increase their lead to 22-4.
With just over ten minutes to go, the hosts had another penalty in front of the sticks, as Saints were caught offside. Again, they opted for two points which Weaver added to give them a four-score lead, 24-4.
Castleford added a fifth try inside the final ten minutes. A penalty for the escort gave them possession inside our ten. A few tackles in, Ashton Golding threw a dummy from marker and spun his way over to score from close range. Weaver added the conversion, 30-4.
With just over three minutes to go, the visitors were again reduced to twelve men as Hastings saw yellow for a tackle on Weaver.
Saints grabbed a consolation in the final minute. The visitors shifted the ball from left to right, with Mark Percival finding Owen Dagnall who strolled over to score in the corner. Sailor added the conversion from the touchline with the final kick of the game, 30-10 Saints were beaten by Castleford.
