Warrington Wolves beat Saints 24-14 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in our 2026 Betfred Super League opener.
First Half
After a tight opening ten minutes, Saints had the first decent opening. On the last tackle, inside the Warrington ten, Jack Welsby kicked high towards Kyle Feldt but he was beaten in the air by Josh Smith.
The following set, Warrington forced a goal-line dropout which Saints went short with but Albert Hopoate claimed it. Later on that set, the Wolves went left and George Williams found Toby King who fended off a defender, burrowing his way over to score. Marc Sneyd converted, 6-0 Saints trailed.
The lead was strengthened shortly after. The hosts got a quick ruck, Danny Walker found Cai Taylor-Wray in support after breaking a tackle, and he broke through a gap and raced 70 metres to score. Sneyd added his second conversion, 12-0.
Saints tried to wrestle a way back into it. After a high kick on the last tackle was kept alive by Saints, Jackson Hastings tried putting a low kick in but it was too strong and dribbled into touch inside the Warrington ten.
Warrington had a third try just after that restart. Taylor-Wray broke through another gap after evading multiple tackles, he found Josh Thewlis on the wing and he then found Hopoate on his inside and he scored in the corner. Sneyd was unable to convert this time around, 16-0.
Inside Warrington territory again, Hastings went for a high, crossfield kick on the last tackle which Feldt patted down for Harry Robertson, but the hosts were alert and made the tackle to turn the ball over.
The hosts almost had a fourth try just before the break. King again tried to reach over from close range but he lost the ball, with a penalty the outcome as Saints were penalised for offside. Later on in that set Hopoate tried to roll over for his second try of the game but Deon Cross did well to hold him up before other Saints got involved in the tackle.
Another penalty followed in that set as Saints were offside claiming a kick. Warrington opted for two points with less than two minutes of the half remaining which Sneyd added, 18-0.
The hosts saw out the remainder of the time with the restart, 18-0 Saints trailed at the break at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Second Half
Saints began the second half with several sets camped on the Warrington line. Cross tried to cut inside from the wing a few tackles into one of them but was held up over the line.
After more sustained pressure, Saints looked to have opened their scoring 53 minutes in. A Warrington error deep inside their own half gifted the Red V field position. Hastings found Welsby who bounced off a tackle before he reached out to ground the ball under pressure. The try was awarded on-field, but after a review the try was disallowed due to an obstruction by David Klemmer, so it remained 18-0.
57 minutes in we had our first on-field decision for the video referee. Saints applied more pressure, Hastings found Alex Walmsley who drove into contact before reaching over the line. The decision was quickly ruled out for a double movement though.
The hosts almost had a chance to increase their lead. Williams put a kick through on the last which Welsby allowed to go out for a seven-tackle set, with Smith close to keeping it alive for the hosts.
The following set, Saints were on the board. Welsby threw a dummy sailed through a gap and backed himself to beat Taylor-Wray in the corner which he did to score. Hastings’ conversion sailed well wide, 18-4. Saints lost Welsby to an injury as a result of the play though, with Dagnall replacing him.
The following set, Saints had another try. A high kick from Hastings on the last landed perfectly in the hands of Tristan Sailor five metres from the line and he scored under the sticks. Hastings added the extras, 18-10 Saints trailed.
Minutes later, Warrington increased their lead. They moved it through the hands from left to right, Taylor-Wray throwing a cut-out pass to Thewlis who scored in the corner. Sneyd added the conversion, 24-10. Hastings was sent to the sin bin as a result of the play for a late hit on the assistor.
Warrington looked to have a fifth try with less than four minutes to go. A Saints error was collected by Thewlis, he found Williams and he found an offload to Hopoate and he broke some tackles before scoring his second try in the corner. The try was disallowed after a check, with Matt Whitley tackled off the ball.
Saints grabbed a consolation in the final minute. Sailor threw a cut-out pass over to top to Feldt on the wing and he strolled over to score. Hastings couldn’t convert, 24-14.
