Saints lost prop Alex Walmsley within the opening two minutes, as he was forced off with an early injury.
The hosts then took the lead seven minutes in. Inside the Trinity ten and on the last tackle facing the sticks, Saints went left. James Roby found Lewis Dodd, he found Jack Welsby and he threw a great pass to Mark Percival to stroll over in the corner. Tommy Makinson’s conversion looked to have gone over, but the touch judges said it has missed, 4-0 Saints led.
Saints had a great chance to extend that lead 14 minutes in. Morgan Knowles peaked his head through the Wakefield line and threw a great offload to Matty Lees, he broke and had options either side of him for a walk in, but opted to keep the ball himself as Will Dagger made the tackle, 4-0 it remained.
Wakefield then had a great chance of their own 25 minutes in. Jay Pitts broke the Saints line down their right edge, he threw the ball to the supporting Mason Lino who had a stroll in had he caught the ball, but he fumbled it so Saints survived, 4-0.
The hosts’ second try did arrive before the break though. Young prop George Delaney came off the bench and earned a ‘six again’ call with his first touch. Off the back of it Dodd found Jonny Lomax, he threw a cut-out pass to Will Hopoate and he strolled in the corner. Makinson’s conversion went wide, 8-0.
Another quickly followed. Four minutes before the break, after Dagger had knocked on a kick in his own ten which gave Saints a scrum. From the scrum, Saints went right and Lomax threw a cut-out pass to Makinson, who slid over in the corner. Tommy was unable to convert his own score, 12-0.
Wakefield had one last chance at the end of the half as a penalty put them in Saints territory. Welsby was able to push the ball dead in goal though, so Saints led 12-0 at the break.
Saints had another great chance to add the score 11 minutes into the second half. The ball was moved just inside the Wakefield between multiple players, Konrad Hurrell found Welsby, he broke down the middle but once again opted not to pass in a 2v1 situation, before being tackle close to the line. Saints earned back to back penalties off the back of it though, the second time in front of the sticks and opted to take two to make it a three-score game. Percival took over kicking duties and converted, 14-0.
The fourth Red V try came just before the hour mark. A good routine in the middle of the field allowed Welsby to break down the heart of the Wakefield line, he had another 2v1 and this time found the supporting Lewis Dodd on his outside to score under the sticks. Percival added the two, 20-0.
Saints’ fifth came just after the hour mark. Following a Wakefield knock on, on their own line. Saints threw the ball right from the scrum, milestone man Lomax finding Hurrell who broke through a tackle to score in the corner. Percy nailed the two from the right touchline, 26-0.
Trinity had a good chance to grab their first point following a move which worked the ball out to Innes Senior on their left wing, but the Huddersfield loanee fumbled the ball under no pressure, 26-0.
That led to s sixth try for the Red V. A kick high in the air was fumbled by Wakefield as the ball was contested. Lomax, who as noted earlier played his 300th game for the club tonight, grabbed the loose ball before burrowing his way under some defenders to score on his special night. Percival converted, 32-0.
There was more to come. Saints were awarded a penalty that pushed them into opposition territory. Later on in the set, Lomax found Hurrell who broke a tackle before flattening Dagger to grab his second try. Percival converted, 38-0.
Those were the final points of the evening. As Saints continued their recent winning run with a comfortable 38-0 victory over Wakefield Trinity at the Totally Wicked Stadium, as Lomax showed his class in his 300th Saints appearance!
