A gritty Saints side beat Hull FC 16-10 at the Totally Wicked Stadium, to make it nine wins in ten games!
First Half
Saints took an early eighth minute lead. Mark Percival made a good carry which put Saints on the front foot. From the play the ball, Daryl Clark picked it up and found Morgan Knowles who broke through the line and rounded Zak Hardaker, before sprinting the remaining 40 metres to score. Kyle Feldt added the conversion, 6-0 Saints led.
The Red V wanted more. Percival found Owen Dagnall on the left edge who did well to avoid a few tackles before finally being wrapped up. On the last, Moses Mbye kicked high towards Feldt who won the contest but the ball went to ground.
Soon after, Saints were awarded a penalty after Knowles was hit off the ball. The hosts opted for two points in front of the sticks which Feldt added, 8-0.
Midway through the first half, we had our first trip to the video referee. A high kick to the right edge wasn’t dealt with by the visitors and Saints claimed it, and looked to have scored under the sticks through Matt Whitley. The referee sent it up as no try, with the evidence deemed insufficient to overturn that decision.
The Saints continued to apply pressure. Mbye again kicked towards Feldt’s right edge, he caught it and passed it backward towards Tristan Sailor who went down the wing before kicking crossfield, which caused the visitors to concede a dropout.
Another chance quickly followed. A high shot on Dagnall pushed the hosts upfield, a few tackles in Saints were awarded a six again but a good shot on Matty Lees forced a knock on deep inside the Hull half.
Saints, camped on the visitors line again, tried to move the ball right to left, this time Welsby’s pass was intercepted by Tom Briscoe and he found Harvey Barron, who raced 50 metres before being stopped by Harry Robertson.
Saints survived the set but we had a trip to the video referee almost instantly after. Robertson was hit on our line, forcing the ball to come loose. Players raced for the ball and Hull claimed to have won it, the refereeing sending it upstairs as no try. After a lengthy check, it was claimed Davy Litten had won the race to the ball and the visitors were awarded the try. Hardaker converted, 8-6.
The visitors had the chance to level the scores just before the break. A penalty in Saints territory allowed them the chance to kick for two, and they did. Hardaker took aim but his effort went wide.
In the final minute of the half, Hull tried to build on the Saints line but made an error, Welsby kicked the ball almost the entire length of the field the other way but Lewis Martin covered in time to concede a dropout. Saints held a narrow 8-6 lead at the break.
Second Half
Saints tried to add to our point tally early in the second period. The hosts asked questions of the Hull line, with Alex Walmsley trying to barge his way over from close range but the visitors’ defence stood firm.
Twelve minutes into a feisty second half, Saints had a chance to add two points, after a Hull FC player was caught offside following a knock on. The hosts opted for two points, Feldt striking the ball through the posts, 10-6 the Red V led.
A fortunate bounce almost gave Saints more points. A high kick by Mbye was allowed to bounce by the visitors, and Dagnall raced onto it. He tried to offload whilst tackled but the ball went to ground and Hull survived again.
It was the hosts who grabbed the first try of the second half though. Saints again had the better field position. On the last tackle inside the Black and Whites ten, Saints ran it and Welsby found Mbye who crashed over from close range to the right of the sticks. Feldt converted, 16-6.
A third Saints try almost followed the next set. Mbye’s high kick was claimed by Welsby, he found Whitley who dove towards the line but was held up a metre short on the last tackle.
Sezer then broke through a gap down the left edge, he tried to kick ahead for Martin down the left edge but Welsby and Robertson got across. The referee ruled knock on though, which gifted Hull a set inside the Saints twenty. On the first tackle, they tried an offload which went straight into Welsby’s arms.
Hull did have their second try of the evening with less than ten minutes to go. Sezer threw a cut out pass to Martin on the left edge, he raced away down the wing to reduce the deficit. Hardaker’s conversion went well wide, 16-10 Saints led.
With just over three minutes to go, the hosts were awarded a penalty in a kickable position, following a tackle off the ball. The hosts opted for two points, Feldt was unable to convert, 16-10 it remained.
Hull went short from the dropout and got the ball back but Saints forced an error later on into the set. That was the final action of the game though, as Saints continued their push for the playoffs with a 16-10 victory over Hull FC at the Totally Wicked Stadium!
