Saints lost 4-18 to Wigan Warriors in the second Derby Day of the season at the Totally Wicked Stadium…

First Half

After a bright start from the hosts, which forced a dropout and the Saints had a penalty after a Wigan player impeded Kyle Feldt, the hosts did take the lead. The hosts went left from under the posts, Jack Welsby threw a great cut-out pass over the top to Deon Cross and he scored in the corner. Kyle Feldt was unable to convert, 4-0 Saints led.

The hosts continued to apply the pressure. Moses Mbye kicked high down the left edge, Wigan allowed the ball to bounce and Cross chased but the visitors conceded a dropout.

Saints tried a similar method minutes later. This time Feldt climbed highest and claimed the ball but Wigan scrambled well and tackled him short of the line.

It took 25 minutes for the visitors to have a meaningful attack. Jai Field broke down the Saints left edge but Daryl Clark made a great tackle to stop him. The following play the visitors went right, Bevan French tried his luck but some strong Red V defence sent him into touch.

The hosts then threatened again. The ball was moved down our left edge, Welsby broke through a gap and tried to find Cross in support but the ball landed in touch.

Wigan replied jsut before the half-hour mark against the run of play. Liam Farrell went through a massive gap , Jack Smith said play on. The following play, they went left and Junior Nsemba found Jake Wardle who cut inside and buried his way over. Harry Smith missed the conversion, 4-4 we were tied.

The visitors took the lead shortly after. Smith’s high kick was claimed by Nsemba, his offload found Liam Marshall who cut inside and buried his way over. Smith added the extras, 4-10.

Just before the break, Curtis Sironen caught Keighran high, Wigan opted for two points which Smith converted, 4-12 the visitors led at half-time.

Second Half

Wigan scored the first points of the second half. Mark Percival kicked down the left edge French picked it up and offloaded to Field who raced the length of the pitch to score. Smith added the conversion from in front of the posts, 4-18 Saints trailed.

The visitors had another golden opportunity. Field again broke down the left edge, he found Nsemba in support but Saints scrambled well before Feldt dealt with the kick on the last tackle.

Saints then had a chance to apply pressure. A high kick by Mbye was dropped by Field. Saints used up a few sets, with Jonny Lomax caught high by the referee but Walmsley knocked on under pressure and Wigan survived.

Smith then ran the ball on the last instead of kicking from within his own half. He found Wardle who broke down the middle before kicking back out towards the left edge but Saints scrambled well and were forced to concede a dropout.

The hosts almost broke through with 20 minutes to go. Sailor and Welsby played a nice one-two before the latter was tackled short of the line. Saints were awarded a penalty though, but Curtis Sironen dropped it early in the tackle count.

With less than four minutes to go, we had our first trip of the evening to the video referee. Feldt was offside after picking up a loose carry from Sailor, Wigan ran it and a few tackles in, Kaide Ellis drove for the line and collided with the post before grounding the ball. The on-field verdict of no try was agreed with though after a lengthy check, following a double movement.

No further action of note happened, as Saints were beaten 4-18 on Derby Day at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
