First Half

Wigan took an early lead at the BrewDog Stadium, just after Saints lost Agnatius Paasi to injury. Harry Smith looked to be going left but he cut back inside on his right foot and went past some Saints defenders to score under the sticks. Adam Keighran converted, 0-6.

Saints responded well. Wigan knocked on inside their own half, Saints moved it through the hands from right to left and Matt Whitley threw a dummy which fooled Liam Marshall and scored under pressure in the corner. Tristan Sailor couldn’t convert from the touchline, 4-6 we trailed.

The visitors thought they had reclaimed the lead four minutes later. A Saints error gifted them possession in our half, Kaide Ellis looked to have rolled his way over from close range but a great tackle from Jake Wingfield held him up over the line, despite a try being given on-field. After a check, it was chalked off and the Warriors had the ball back ten metres out.

Soon after they did grab a second try though. Jack Farrimond kicked high to the right edge, Zach Eckersley patted it down and Farrimond claimed it to score in the corner. Keighran converted off the post, 4-12.

Saints grabbed a second try on the half-hour mark. The Red V held good field position in the Warriors ten, Daryl Clark found himself with the ball and did well to reach an arm out to score. Sailor added the conversion, 10-12 we trailed at the break.

Second Half

Fifteen minutes into the second half, the visitors increased their lead. Smith managed to get a kick off whilst being tackled and Jai Field collected the ball to score from close range. Keighran added the conversion, 10-18.

That lead was increased even further with twelve minutes to go. The hosts worked the ball to their right edge to Zach Eckersley who raced down the wing unopposed to score in the corner. Keighran maintained his 100% record with the boot, 10-24.

Saints had hope as we entered the last ten. Lewis Murphy broke down the left edge and found Jackson Hastings in support and he scored in the corner. Sailor added the conversion, 16-24.

With five minutes to go, we had another. Saints moved the ball left and Sailor spotted a gap and made the most of it to score. He converted his own try, 22-24.

Saints had the lead for the first time in the contest with less than three minutes to go. Debutant loanee, Bill Leyland spotted a gap from dummy half on the Wigan line and took full advantage to score. Sailor converted, 28-24.

Wigan went short with the kick off, which bounced backwards but Smith was unable to catch it and Leyland raced half the length of the pitch to score his second try in as many minutes, and send the Saints fans into rapture. Sailor converted, 34-24.

Wigan forced a penalty with the final possession of the game but nothing came of it. Saints producing a magnificent comeback to seal a 34-24 Derby Day victory over the Warriors!
