Saints held on late in the game to beat Castleford 26-24 at the Totally Wicked Stadium to end our 2025 regular season campaign!

First Half

Five minutes in, the hosts opened the scoring. The Red V marched downfield, Jack Welsby threw a cut-out pass to Noah Stephens who powered his way over from close range. Kyle Feldt added the extras, 6-0 the hosts led early on.

Castleford replied quickly. A six again in the Saints half gifted them a repeat set, they moved the ball well through the hands down their right edge and Will Tate strolled over in the corner. Tex Hoy couldn’t convert from the touchline, 6-4 Saints led.

Saints fought back. A couple of repeat sets on the Tigers line eventually saw Jack Welsby put in a low kick, but the visitors conceded a dropout. From that repeat set, Saints almost had a second try. Welsby found an offload under the Castleford sticks and Morgan Knowles tried to reach for it but the ball went to ground and Castleford restarted on their 20.

The visitors took the lead 27 minutes into the half. Again threatening down their right edge, Sam Wood found an offload to Tate who went over in the corner for his second try of the night. Hoy added the conversion this time around from the touchline, 6-10 we trailed.

Eight minutes before the break, Saints were level. Jonny Lomax floated a high kick to the right edge, Feldt jumped highest, claimed the ball and dotted it down over the line. He couldn’t turn his four-pointer into six with the conversion, 10-10 we were tied as we headed for the break.

The Red V took the lead just before the break. James Bell reached out after collecting a pass from close range and after a long video referee check, it was awarded. Feldt added the extras, 16-10 the hosts led.

The hosts could’ve had another before the break. Tristan Sailor offloaded the ball whilst spinning into touch and Feldt collected it and touched down. Sailor was ruled out but we challenged the call which was deemed successful, Saints had a scrum 20 metres out but were unable to make it count, 16-10 the hosts led at the break.

Second Half

Five minutes into the second half, Saints had a fourth try. Once again, Lomax kicked high towards the right edge and Feldt claimed it to score. This time he was able to turn his four points into six with the conversion, 22-10 Saints led.

The visitors went close. Louis Senior broke down the left wing but some good last ditch defending by Saints held him up short of the line, before we were forced to concede a dropout on the last as Sailor got tackled in goal.

Just past the midway point of the second half, Saints had a fifth try. Good hands down the left edge ended with Deon Cross finding Jon Bennison, he cut in from the wing and went over. Bennison, taking over the kicking duties with Feldt off the field, missed the conversion, 26-10.

Saints could’ve had another as we entered the last ten. A high kick was fumbled under the Castleford sticks, Shane Wright picked it up and scored but the referee ruled knock on.

The Tigers tried to find a way back into it. Senior again broke down the left wing but Moses Mbye did well to get across and put him into touch.

Soon after, they did have another try with five minutes to go. A break downfield saw Saints do well to scramble, but a few players later they went left and Daejarn Asi threw a cut-out pass to Wood who scored in the corner. Hoy missed the conversion, 26-14 Saints led.

Two minutes later, they had another four-pointer. From the restart, the visitors got themselves into Saints territory and Tate spotted a gap down the short side from dummy half and scored in the corner. Hoy again missed the kick, 26-18.

From the next restart, Castleford kicked down the right edge on the first tackle, Tate came up with the ball and kicked ahead again for Liam Horne, the ball sat up perfectly for him and he scored under the sticks. The call went to the video referee, and the try was awarded. Hoy converted from in front of the posts, 26-24.
